Arge Slip-cast Ceramic Vase

Artist: Louis Roche

Large 19th century ceramic vase Its size and sculptural details immediately attract attention. The generously proportioned container has a flared edge, a rounded belly and a pair of handles. The globular belly is completely covered with finely modelled vine leaves and applied bunches of grapes, connected by branches running around the vase.

Two carved handles in the shape of branches elegantly frame the room and join the wide flared collar.
The set has a beautiful polychrome with warm amber brown and green tones, highlighting the relief and giving a very decorative appearance.
Large-format piece, particularly imposing and heavy.
Very beautiful decorative object evoking the arts of the table and the wine world, ideal in a large room, an interior of character or a furnished cellar.
Time wear in good condition
The first censuses to our knowledge stating his profession as a ceramist date back to 1906, he is 43 years old, however his activity as a ceramist is much earlier since he already obtained in 1893 a special mention during the great exhibition of CAVAILLON. He probably combined on that date the two activities of farmer and ceramist and these activities were practised in the paternal property of the MIANS district.
Some studies would seem to show that Louis ROCHE's ceramic production dates back to 1880?
This artist was particularly distinguished by his talent of reproductions of ancient earthenware, ceramists Palissy, Tanagra, Bernard de la Croix, Faïences de Moustiers, Faïence de Marseille, Apt, Montpellier, Rouen
Its ceramics, sling style, are decorated with fruits from the region (figs, tangerines, pears, grapes, pomegranates....) or animals (wild boars, frogs, cicadas, lizards very often....)
The quality of these patterns and the colour of the enamels make him a true artist, much more than just a "copyist".
He is also present through his works in the Earthenware Museum of the Aygues Tower and the ORANGE Museum.
Some specialists abroad recognise his creations.
