Saint John The Baptist In The Desert – 17th Century
A work from southern Europe in Germany from the early 17th century, probably from an altarpiece. In carved wood in the round and with a polychrome patina, it is partially gilded. Saint John the Baptist in the desert is seated on a tree trunk with the Lamb of God on a rock from which emerges a lizard, symbol of the desert.
Our holy man is depicted here as a young man, dressed according to the classical iconography of the precursor of Christ, seated and in a preaching posture. The polychromy is well preserved, notably the rich gilding of the cloak. T
he style is dynamic, typical of the Alpine Baroque schools.
Dimensions of 60 cm by 66 cm and 27 cm deep.
Good condition despite some occasional losses.
