Pair Of Silver Monstrances - Armand Caillat - 19th Century
Artist: Armand Caillat
Our imposing twin monstrances represent a rare arrangement in the liturgy, as the monstrance is traditionally used to display a single consecrated host. However, they are sometimes found in pairs when they flanked a high altar symmetrically, or because they were used for separate side altars.
The bases of these monstrances are richly decorated with high relief, at the center of which stands a magnificent Salvator Mundi, flanked by the Virgin Mary holding an Agnus Dei.
The ensemble is crowned by a finely chiseled cross.
A creation by the Lyon-based master silversmith Armand Caillat, circa 1869.
Bearsthe master’s hallmark A.C.S. with a bee and the 950/1000 silver hallmark.
Total gross weight of 2,066 grams.
Dimensions: 80 cm high by 37 cm wide by 21.5 cm deep.
Condition: shows signs of use—minor chips—no lunule
Reference numbers 872 and 925
