Bronze Christ On A Repoussé Copper Cross - Circa 1550
The JARDIN DES MOINES Gallery offers you a 16th century Crucifix, with its bronze Christ, a full figure once patinated in black. The cross is a thin plate of hammered and embossed copper on which is fixed a small plate with the initials INRI that Pontius Pilate had inscribed on the Cross. Christ stands with his head tilted to the right, his hips draped with a short perizonium.
The folds of the drapery as well as several anatomical details such as the fingers, eyes, lock of hair and beard are incised in the bronze. The nail is missing at the feet.
The copper plate was hammered on a core that was probably once made of wood. It has since disappeared, replaced by a lead amalgam with a suspension attachment.
The cross was probably originally two-sided.
Dimensions of 34 cm by 22.5
A piece appraised by Mrs. Raphaele Skupien
