Sculpture Of Saint Theodulus - 18th Century

A representation of Saint Theodulus or Theodore of Sion, a 4th-century bishop.
A Germanic work, likely from western Bavaria, carved in wood in the round, polychrome and gilded with gold leaf. Our saintly bishop, seemingly in motion and draped in magnificent robes, is depicted here with his traditional iconographic attributes: a bunch of grapes, a little devil, and a bell. Legend recounts that he had a bell carried from Rome to Sion by the devil, and that he also performed the miracle of multiplying grape must, hence the bunch of grapes he often holds on a book.
In good condition – minor losses to the devil's hand. The removable crosier has been reattached and remains fragile.
Dimensions: 73 cm high x 31 cm wide x 16 cm deep.
