Antique Merkan Rug, 105 X 167 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool On Wool, Central Asia, Mid-19th Century

Commonly listed in the broad category of Afghans or Turkmens, this very beautiful bright rug is a Merkan from the mid-19th century.
In used condition, with light wear and small tears, this little-known pearl from Central Asia measures 105 cm wide by 167 cm long.
A true artifact of Central Asian cultures, this rug, despite its imperfections due to time, which spares nothing and no one, remains magnificent in its bold colors!

These rugs, always based on deep orange-red and midnight blue, feature bands of güls horizontally or diagonally.
The güls are of various shapes and the very stylized ivory flowers represent pistachio flowers.
The border has a marked Persian character, approaching the Caucasus.
The wool-on-wool texture is solid, the knotting being very dense and fine.
Note the beauty and quality of each small medallion enclosing a star of Medes, star of Solomon, surrounded by stylized rams' horns, called Kotchaks.
These rugs are always wool on wool, sometimes the decoration is very close to the Afghans using the gül motif, but always with brighter and more radiant shades.
The elegance of the decoration is simple and its symmetrical organization made very pleasant to the eye thanks to shades that coexist perfectly.
These are comfortable rugs, the knotting is dense and tight.
This style of rug can be implemented in any type of interior decoration even in this state of use.
The same spirit of knotting and pattern is found in neighboring rugs from Turkmenistan but also in Afghanistan.
These rugs remain with the Caucasus the hardest to differentiate, so many are the patterns and specific to the clans of all Central Asia.
