Masterpiece Chalice And Paten In Solid Silver (950/1000) With Vermeil, Circa 1850
This large French chalice with paten, dating from around 1850, is a superb example of the Gothic Revival style.
Made from solid 950/1000 silver (1st title) with rich vermeil. Signed by the French master silversmith FF The chalice is richly decorated and composed of several elements. The cup and base are adorned with medallions: The cup features three praying angels, all different. The base shows three larger medallions representing Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. All six medallions are of remarkable quality. The cup consists of two layers: an inner cup of vermeil and a decorative outer layer of silver, adding depth and refinement. The paten, also in silver and vermeil, is decorated with the letters IHS and a heart. The alternation between silver and vermeil gives the whole a splendid appearance. Each part is adorned with fine details, including repeated French fleur-de-lis motifs, varying in size and finish – some in vermeil, others in silver – a true jewel of religious art.
Dimensions: Total height with paten: 23 cm (9") Height of chalice: 22.6 cm (8.8") Diameter of cup: 9 cm Diameter of paten: 14.4 cm Diameter of base: 13.7 cm.
Weight: Chalice: 453 g Paten: 103 g Total weight: 556 g (including the silver-plated base plate)
Hallmarks: Each element bears the official French hallmarks: the head of Minerva (1st title, used since 1838) and the maker's mark FF The inner plate is marked "U.Bas" (still in silver-plated metal). The paten bears three different hallmarks, including the round Minerva, an unidentified maker's mark, and a 1st grade Hippocrates mark (also used since 1838). This precious model is in excellent condition and is eye-catching with its ornamental richness. A true gem in the neo-Gothic style. Thank you for visiting my shop. with all my love, Ben
