Large Painting by Alfred Godchaux (1839-1907) Mountain Landscape in the Pyrenees Alfred Godchaux was born in Paris on the Île de la Cité on January 24, 1839. He lived in Pau, Orléans, and on Rue de Vesle in Reims at the time of his death. According to entries in the exhibition catalogs in which he participated, he was a student of Gustave Courbet. His sons Eugène (1878-1956) and Henri Godchaux (1881-1919) were also painters. He is sometimes confused with one of them, Eugène, known as Émile Godchaux. Both artists favored similar subjects, particularly Pyrenean landscapes and seascapes. However, Alfred Godchaux's work also includes views of Constantinople, Italy, especially Venice, and Brittany. From 1880, Alfred Godchaux was a member of the southwest section of the French Alpine Club, then chaired by Franz Schrader. The art columnist Paul Eudel devoted a chapter to him and described him as a picturesque and boastful character, painting and selling his canvases in public.
