PHARMACY POT or ALBARELLO
Muel, Province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain
Late 17th century
Earthenware
H. 26.5; Diam. 12 cm
This majolica albarello is cylindrical in shape, curved at the waist (to make it easier to hold) and with a shoulder at the beaded neck (to attach a ligature and close the container). The body is decorated with polychrome flowers, birds and bees on a sand-blasted white background.
Albarelli were prized by apothecaries and pharmacies, who used them to store ointments, medicinal plants and other powders, thanks to the non-porous properties of these containers.
