Mask - Idjo / Nigeria
The Ijo (or Ijaw or Idjo) are a group of peoples and ethnic groups very widespread in Nigeria. They are found in the Delta or River State regions of Nigeria. Peoples of farmers and fishermen, they sculpted many masks to venerate their ancestors and a multitude of deities such as those called "water spirits". This zoomorphic mask is reminiscent of the figure of the rhinoceros, a powerful animal whose prominent horn is often associated with numerous curative virtues.
