"Prestige Spoon In Blonde Horn - Abyssinia, Ethiopia, Circa 1900 (3)"
Prestige Spoon in Blonde Horn - Abyssinia, Ethiopia, Circa 1900 Exceptionally large spoon (47cm) carved in beautiful honey-colored blonde horn. This type of spoon was used by the wealthy class of the population in Abyssinia. Generally carved from buffalo or rhinoceros horn for the wealthiest. Several similar examples were collected by the Paul Soleillet (1842 - 1886) and Robert Du Bourg de Bozas (1871 - 1902) missions in the years 1881 and 1902. They are now preserved in the reserves of the Musée du quai Branly. Both will indicate that these spoons were "in use only among very rich Ethiopians". Sold with its base. A slight notch under the spoon. 47cm 30gr
