"Mbole Statue"
The Mbole Ofika statue depicts a hanged man, with his body stretched out and arms drooping. It is used by the Lilwa secret society as a warning against betrayal, theft, or transgression of clan laws. These figures served to commemorate those executed for breaking social rules and served as a reminder of the importance of honor and loyalty. The expressive, often angular style heightens the dramatic tension of the scene. Beyond its visual impact, this work is a powerful tool for social regulation and collective memory, rooted in Mbole customary justice.
