Artist: Attr. A Theodoor Rombouts (anvers 1597-1637)
The beautiful painting (oil on canvas 112 x 154 approximately) representing a lady buying food from a merchant is the work of the Caravaggesque-Manferdien Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637).
Rombouts is an extremely interesting figure in the painting of his time. It captures the avant-garde of Caravaggio naturalism with its diffusion through the generist academicism of Bartolomeo Manfredi. His language evolves in stylistic research which will be reinforced by the example of other representatives of international naturalism that he knows in his Roman years, such as Baburen and De Haan.
This canvas is placed in the painter's Roman years those around 1620, the canvas reveals a strong iconological substrate which, perhaps, linked to an unknown "pendant" alludes to the senses of sight (all the protagonists exchange intense glances) and Touch (in the hands of the woman counting the coins). The alleged "pendant" must have contained references to the other 3: smell, taste and hearing. The matrix refers to Caravaggio's “good luck” and “lute player” themed projects. Nonetheless, valid comparisons refer to already known paintings by Rombouts such as "the musical duo" and "Christ drives out the merchants from the temple".
The painting was studied and attributed to Rombouts by the art historian prof. Maurizio Marini.
