Francesco Bartolozziest le plus célèbre graveur et aquafortiste anglais de la fin du 18èmesiècle.Étudiant l’art auprès de Joseph Wagner dans sa Venise natale, Francesco Bartolozzi a commencé sa carrière en gravant des cuivres d’ après les maîtres italiens.
Il est invité par le roi d’Angleterre à venir à Londres en 1764 pour graver les dessins de Guercino, Tibaldi et d’autres artistes italiens dans la collection royale du château de Windsor.
Une nouvelle technique de gravure était récemment apparue en Angleterre à cette époque et, bien que Bartolozzi n’ait pas revendiqué son invention, son nom est à jamais lié à la gravure en pointillée.

Studying art with Joseph Wagner in his native Venice, Francesco Bartolozzi began his career by engraving brass after the Italian masters. He was invited by the King of England to come to London in 1764 to engrave the designs of Guercino, Tibaldi and other Italian artists in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
