Chirvan Akstafa Rug, Caucasus, 143 X 237 Cm, Wool, Late 19th Century, Collector

Artist: Tribu Des Azéris
Chirvan Akstafa carpet from the Caucasus measuring 143 cm wide by 237 cm long.
A superb model with a brown field, where four star polygons are arranged, including the outline of one, with ornamentation of large stylized flowers and sticks.
Between these polygons are five pairs of hens or roosters, all arranged in the same direction.
Hens and roosters are a symbol of pride and belonging. On the field a multitude of stylized flowers of different designs as well as the presence of two figures in white wool.
In the tradition this figure bears the symbolic name of "hands on hips", which indicates the imminent birth of a child or the fact that the woman of the house is carrying a child during the tedious execution of this complex carpet.
This decoration with birds and medallions is called Akstafa.

Carpets prior to 1925 are defined in five groups: Kazakhs, Karabakh or Sjirvan (Shirvan), Kuba (Kouba) and Dagestani.
Carpets from the Karabakh region often have soft patterns and are reminiscent of Persian rugs.
Apart from this classification, there are also Gandja, Silé and Verni rugs.
These rugs are distinguished by their very varied and imaginative geometric patterns.
We sometimes find, in stylized form, animal figures or geometric and architectural patterns.
Dimensions: width: 143 cm (56") x length: 237 cm (93")
A carpet with a very beautiful patina, a beautiful wear characterizing an old carpet that has already lived, (an old restoration visible on the left side), is not what one looks for in an old carpet.
This piece of great beauty and delicacy of design and color is a pure jewel of Caucasian art from the second half of the 19th century and can serve as a decorative element on the floor, but in full view of its large size. beauty, it can also be placed as a wall decoration.
