Pedestal Element Of Crucifix In Intarsia XVIIth

Crucifix plinth element in intarsia, 17th century northern Italy. Although fragmentary and presenting lacks and accidents, this element is characteristic of the ancestor technique of marquetry, intarsia or tarsia, used in Italy since the 16th century.
Similar to sculpture, this technique of inlaying pieces of wood cut into shaped cells gives an incredible decorative effect through the choice of species and shapes.
Here, if what we notice first are the stars, the kinds of rounded and superimposed "V" are reminiscent of a coat of arms, while on each side are sculpted decorative elements.
Made up of a ball, it seems to me, in chestnut, base and crowned with boxwood and encrusted with different species in different sawing directions to modify its aspects.
