A Wool Felt Jacket Embellished With Gold Trim—ottoman Or Greek, Circa 1850–1890
Second half of the 19th century
Ottoman or Greek
A caraco, a women’s jacket made of scarlet red wool felt and embroidered with gold. High-waisted, fitted cut, long sleeves, and a deep heart-shaped neckline. Beautiful embroidery featuring gold braids and cords accentuates the bust, which fastens with a double crossover closure at the front using period hooks. Elegant slits on the sleeves, which end in mittens fastened by twelve tassels of gold-colored trim on each forearm. Unbleached cotton lining. Very slight patina on the felt, with no major flaws. However, the gold-colored sections retain a beautiful luster. Good overall structural condition.
Dimensions: Equivalent to French size 35. Shoulders 32 cm, chest 90 cm, sleeves 62 cm, waist 68 cm, height 41 cm.
