A Six-panel Tosa School Folding Screen With Scenes From The Genji Monogatari
A Japanese six-panel byobu of the Tosa School, executed on gold leaf and painted on paper with natural mineral pigments and gold moriage clouds, depicting an elegant courtly scene from the Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji).
Within the refined architecture of a shinden-zukuri residence, aristocrats gather in conversation and ceremonial moments. Other figures appear in adjoining pavilions overlooking gardens, streams, and rocky outcrops, creating a rich and articulated narrative. Winding streams, maple trees, sculpted pines, and stylized atmospheric clouds rhythmically articulate the pictorial space.
