A Six-panel Folding Screen Depicting A Red-crowned Crane On A Pine Tree

A medium-sized Japanese six-panel folding screen, painted on gilt silk, depicting a red-crowned crane perched on the branch of a pine tree (matsu).

The composition is elegant and restrained, unfolding across a luminous gold ground that enhances the majestic presence of the crane, a subject highly esteemed in Japanese painting for its auspicious symbolism of longevity, good fortune, and fidelity.

The screen bears the red seal Kahō, attributable to Kawakita Kahō (1875–1940). A painter of the traditional Japanese nihonga school, he studied under Kōno Bairei and Kikuchi Hōbun, and exhibited regularly at the prestigious Bunten exhibitions, where he received numerous awards.
