A Pair Of Six-panel Folding Screens From The Kanō School Depicting Manchurian Cranes

An important and early antique pair of six-panel Japanese folding screens from the Kanō school, painted in ink and natural mineral pigments on a gold-leaf ground. The composition unfolds harmoniously across both screens, forming an expansive waterside landscape of remarkable balance.

Groups of cranes are depicted along the shoreline among bamboo, reeds, and aquatic plants, while others fly across the golden expanse.

The exceptional quality of the painting is evident in the precise anatomical rendering of the cranes, the meticulous treatment of their plumage, and the subtle modulation of the ink tones and mineral pigments. Extending across the entire surface, the gold-leaf ground reflects the light and enhances the spatial depth of the landscape.

Both screens bear the signature of Kanō Hakuen (1642–1726).

Period: Edo period, early 18th century
Dimensions: 176 x 376.5 cm.
Condition report: The screens are in good condition, with minor wear to the gold leaf and the lacquered wooden frames. The lower screen has areas of retouching to the gold leaf on the second and fifth panels.
