Antique Nevers Earthenware Bowl/dish With Fluted Rim, Featuring A Hand-painted Rooster Design; Late 13th–19th Century
A superb polychrome azure blue and orange rooster, standing proudly on one leg atop a fence, surrounded by tall grass and with stylized birds flying overhead. The hand-painted design has retained its magnificent colors. . Very much in vogue during the French Revolution, the rooster symbolized vigilance and the patriotic people. The spontaneous brushwork and the painting’s naïve charm confirm that this is a high-quality artisanal piece, where each item remains unique.
The attribution is based entirely on the style of the rooster motif (characteristic of productions from Nevers or, at times, the Argonne region from the late 18th or 19th century)
Themarli is highlighted by an eleganthand-painted geometric frieze, alternating between small blue teeth or waves and concentric yellow/orange bands.
The back of the dish is entirely decorated with godrons (raised grooves), typical of the folk art of that period. The raw terracotta foot attests to its authenticity and artisanal craftsmanship.
An authentic period piece, without a mark or signature (characteristic of folk art tableware from this period).
