Double-sided Pen-and-ink Drawing, Studies Of Classical Figures, Roman Warrior On Horseback. 17th
An interesting drawing in brown pen, double-sided. On one side, a Roman warrior on horseback, in motion, surrounded by quick sketches of various figures. A powerful drawing, with athletic musculature, conveying a sense of strength and flexibility. Collection label, Lugt, unidentified.
On the other side, an elderly, bearded man dressed in ancient style is surrounded by studies, walking with his arms outstretched forward. At his feet, a young man kneels, holding a large ewer over a large platter. A sketch of three women on the right side, engaged in conversation. To the left of the noble elderly man, in the background, is a very loose sketch of a Roman camp with a ceremonial tent, guarded by two soldiers. On the far left, a young man holding a staff appears to be pointing in a direction to a man who is partially depicted, moving toward the right. The sheet was certainly cut vertically on this side.
The sheet is rich and powerful on both sides.
The paper has brown spots. This sheet comes from a sketchbook; the fold at the bottom of the drawing is visible, as are the holes from the fasteners. There are small, old restorations using strips of paper glued to one side and along one edge.
Italy, 17th century.
