Portrait Of A Holy Man, Oil On Canvas, 17th Century. France. Beautiful 18th-century Frame.
A beautiful portrait of an elderly holy man—a monk or hermit—with his hands clasped beneath his forked beard, his expression serene yet weary. His head is covered by a dark brown hood, apparently of that color. He holds a slender staff in his left hand, resting it along his shoulder. His hands, with prominent veins, are very realistic.
Oil on canvas, mounted on board. The canvas appears to be very old.
Magnificent, later frame, gilded with gold leaf, with the spandrels adorned with large leaves carved from solid wood. The frame panels are decorated with cross-hatching.
