White And Blue Vietnamese Porcelain Ewer From The Hoi An Shipwreck (15th Century)

A white/blue porcelain stoneware ewer from the shipwreck off the coast of Hoi An (Vietnam).
A few barnacle deposits remain on the base and inside, attesting to its underwater origin. It features a characteristic spiral pattern of iron-red slip on the base.
It is complete, with no breaks, missing pieces, or cracks—which is rather rare—though there is slight, localized erosion of the glaze along the rim.
Height: 24.5 cm. Weight: 835 g.

The shipwreck, discovered at a depth of 70 m and dated to the 15th century, was archaeologically excavated in 1997–1999, and its cargo of ceramics was sold by Butterfields in San Francisco in 2000.

Before cleaning off the marine deposits, the openwork decoration on the body still showed some traces of iron red, and the bird figure retained minute remnants of gilding.
