17th Marble Putto, Baroque Sculpture, Northern Italy

Marble putto, Baroque sculpture, Northern Italy, 17th century.
An indispensable figure in 17th-century art, the putto plays a highly significant role in the composition. Having shed the rigidity of the past, his childlike figure becomes exaggeratedly dynamic and theatrical, with dancing, unstable poses and a strong expressiveness far removed from the idealized calm of the Renaissance. The faces express curiosity, liveliness, wonder, or a sweet torment; the hair is curly, unruly, and wavy, designed to capture the light and create plays of chiaroscuro; the childlike forms are exaggeratedly soft, full, and defined by a profound sense of plasticity and volume.
White marble, in a fragmentary state of preservation.
