Léon Espinasse – Portrait Of A Bloodhound – Watercolor – Signed
Artist: Espinasse Léon (vers 1870 – Après 1900, France)
Léon Espinasse (Paris, c. 1870 – after 1900)
Portrait of a Bloodhound, c. 1900
Watercolor on paper
Signed lower left
30 x 23 cm – 39.5 x 32.5 cm with frame
Good condition
Modern frame made of stained and waxed wood, dark brown mat, very good condition
Have you noticed the small red patch under the eye? It is this very accurate detail that gives this dog its slightly melancholic air, so typical of the Bloodhound.
Léon Espinasse paints him in profile, his head slightly raised, his gaze turned toward something we cannot see. The long ears fall in soft folds down to the collar; the jowls hang heavily beneath the jaw. The brown coat is rendered with small, dense brushstrokes—darker in the recesses, lighter on the skull and muzzle. The nose gleams, with a few touches of white to make it shine.
The leather collar, with its brass buckle, adds a golden touch that warms the overall composition. The background is left almost bare: nothing distracts attention from the animal.
This is a true portrait—that of a specific dog, with its own character. A watercolor executed with great confidence, ideal for a dog lover or hunting enthusiast, or simply for anyone who appreciates sensitive, well-crafted works of art.
Condition
Good overall condition. Two slight areas of wear, one on the jowl and the other at the base of the ear, barely visible. Fresh colors. Modern frame made of stained and waxed wood, in very good condition.
The Artist
Born in Paris around 1870, Léon Espinasse was an animal painter who also created still lifes. He trained under Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin-Constant, two renowned masters at the Académie Julian, and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1896.
Little is known about his life, but his portraits of dogs—particularly his watercolors—are highly sought after by art lovers. They consistently display the same attention to detail and careful observation of each animal’s personality.
