"amour" Bronze Clock On White Marble, Napoleon III Period
A superb French Louis XVI-style mantel clock from the Napoleon III period (circa 1860–1890). A winged Cupid in bronze with a dark patina sits against the movement, his head crowned with a wreath of flowers, an ivy garland across his chest, a golden feather in one hand, and a scroll of paper in the other. The finely chased gilded bronze case is crowned with a trophy of arrows, a book, and laurel branches. The ensemble rests on a stepped white marble base, adorned with gilt-bronze beaded friezes, a rich central appliqué featuring a floral medallion with a ribbon bow and laurel branches, and gilt spinning-top feet. An imposing piece, very heavy and of exceptional quality.
