Gilded Mirror, Louis XV/rocaille Style (19th Century, Probably From The Napoleonic III Era)
An elegant gilded wooden mirror with a curved, scalloped pediment (the classic “gendarme’s hat” shape) and a richly carved crown. The pediment consists of an asymmetrical rocaille cartouche adorned with a shell motif, surrounded by exuberant acanthus foliage, C-shaped scrolls, and carved floral garlands. The frame itself is adorned with a delicate guilloché (grid-like) pattern between pearl fillets, and the corners are finished with additional scrolls.
The mirror has a beveled edge, a sign of high-quality craftsmanship.
Material and technique: carved and gilded wooden frame (likely linden wood with stucco/gesso beneath the leaf gilding), a typically French or French-inspired technique from the second half of the 19th century, reflecting the Rocaille style of Louis XV.
Condition: the gilding shows natural wear and slight loss at the prominent points of the carving (wood/gesso visible in places), which is typical and to be expected for a piece of this age and attests to its authenticity—it has not been recently regilded.
A distinctive decorative piece, ideal for display above a fireplace, a sideboard, or a console table.
