Schrettegger Sundial With Instructions And Case, Late 18th Century
Artist: Johann Schrettegger
An equinoctial sundial made of brass, signed by Johann Schrettegger in Augsburg. The dial is octagonal in shape.
The central compass indicates the cardinal directions. The needle is original and works perfectly.
The hour dial, in the form of an open ring, can be adjusted for inclination according to the latitude of the observation site. The degrees of latitude are indicated by a foldable arc graduated in degrees from 10° to 90°. The gnomon is hinged.
A rare example that has retained its original case and, most notably, its instruction manual written in French and German, with a list of numerous European cities and their latitudes on the back.
It is uncommon to find one complete with its case and instruction manual.
The dial measures 5 x 5.2 cm.
