Large Rack-and-pinion Gear, Circa 1880
Artist: Inconnu
Large gear of a rack-and-pinion system, or a pinion and rack, or a toothed wheel and rack.
The wheel is mounted/supported by two bridges, with a crank passing through the center of them, which is used to turn the wheel and thus move the rack back and forth.
The model, which is very well made, is unsigned but bears the stamp “l’école municipale d’apprentis” four times. This school was founded in 1872 in Paris, on Boulevard de la Vilette, and was the first school to provide technical training outside of a workshop apprenticeship. It can be considered the precursor to the vocational high schools of the 20th century.
The model is in good condition with a beautiful patina. It is in perfect working order.
Dimensions: 60x25x15 cm
