Cylindrical Biedermeier Secretary Desk In Walnut, Southern Germany, Circa 1825–1830
A beautiful, high-quality Biedermeier cylindrical secretary desk from southern Germany, dating from approximately 1825–1830. This piece is walnut-veneered on softwood and is particularly distinguished by the meticulous selection and elaborate craftsmanship of its veneers, which highlight the wood’s grain.
The veneer pattern on the front, with its six symmetrical sections, is particularly remarkable, as it was crafted from a single piece of wood, from bottom to top. The evenly arranged grain patterns lend the secretary desk a beautiful, soothing harmony and underscore the high quality of its craftsmanship.
The secretary desk features three large drawers offering ample storage space. The top drawer is located above the semicircular cylindrical latch, with two others below it.
The mechanism of the semicircular cylindrical lid is operated by a sliding writing tray. When pulled out, the lid opens to reveal a finely crafted interior.
Inside are four small drawers, also veneered in walnut with particularly striking grain. In the center is an open niche featuring a small mirror and a decorative chessboard. The writing tray is made of solid wood and offers a large surface for writing or working.
The cylindrical secretary desk combines the clean lines of the Biedermeier style with well-thought-out functionality. Thanks to the warm color of its wood and its understated design, it fits equally well into both classic and modern interiors.
A comparable piece is illustrated on page 219 of the specialized book *Biedermeier-Möbel – Deutschland und Donaumonarchie* by Rainer Haaff.
ConditionThe writing desk has been professionally restored and is ready for installation.
The wooden surfaces have been re-polished with shellac, which beautifully highlights the walnut’s superb grain.
All functions have been tested and work perfectly. The cylindrical mechanism, the sliding writing surface, and the drawers operate smoothly.
