19th-century Victorian Davenport Desk.
19th-century Victorian Davenport desk.
A rare antique Victorian Davenport desk made of inlaid amboyna burl.
The name “Amboyna” derives from the island from which its exports originally began, namely the island of Ambon in Indonesia.
Its wood is considered one of the finest in the world.
It is a very hard wood, particularly resistant to termites. This characteristic, combined with its superb beauty, makes it highly sought after by people worldwide who use it to craft luxury furniture and works of art.
Amboyna (Pterocarpus indicus) also has a characteristic that makes it truly unique. When cut, it releases an unmistakable scent of roses.
It features a prized piano-shaped top, centered by a panel inlaid with exotic woods. This desk/study table features a retractable door on the top that reveals a document storage compartment. The cylindrical top slides open to reveal a series of compartments and an adjustable writing surface upholstered in leather. Beneath it is a compartment closed by a door featuring yellow blown glass that protects the shelves used for sheet music, supported by elegant turned legs, embellished with fluted decorative elements and shaped finials. The piece combines functionality with refined aesthetics, embodying the taste for stately writing desks typical of 19th-century furnishings.
A piece with remarkable antique charm, ideal for a study, a library, or a room furnished in a classic style, particularly notable for the richness of its burl wood and its interior organization.
The piece is equipped with casters for easy movement.
Dimensions: width 57.5 cm – depth 50 cm – height 93.5 cm
