Tsuba. Oni And Beans By Jôi. Edo Period, Japan.
Artist: Jôi
A beautiful tsuba made of a copper alloy (Sentoku) inlaid with shakudo and gold. On one side, a figure is throwing beans, while on the other side, a demon looks on with concern. This depicts the annual Japanese custom (mamemaki) of driving demons out of homes by throwing beans on the ground. Signed by Jôi (Sujiura, 1701–1761), with his mark inlaid in gold within a square of shakudo. The piece is extremely elegant. However, we believe it was not the work of the master himself, but rather that of a follower. Japan, Edo period, 18th or 19th century. 76 mm x 4 mm
