View Of The Paris Area By Philippe Budelot, Circa 1800
Artist: Philippe Budelot
View of the Paris area by Philippe Budelot, Consulate–Empire period, circa 1800.
A landscape featuring five figures and a dog on a path bordering a forest.
In the background, a hill bathed in the warm light of twilight overlooks a body of water in which a few trees are reflected.
Philippe Budelot (1770–1840) trained under Lazare Bruandet and exhibited at the Salon from 1793 to 1841.
He painted hunting scenes, riders resting, fords, and forest paths—all situations in which the landscape unfolds alongside the presence of figures. At the 1810 Salon, he presented a landscape titled “The Élysée Garden of the Musée des Monuments Français.” Some works are noted as having been created in collaboration for the figures.
This oil on canvas mounted on a key-frame is signed “Ph. Budelot” in the lower right corner and presented in its original frame with a palmette design (formerly recut).
It bears several handwritten annotations on the reverse: “View of the Paris Environs—Figures by Dernay (or Desnay),” as well as exhibition labels.
Canvas dimensions : 32 cm x 41 cm / dimensions with frame : 40.5 cm x 50.5 cm
