"snowy Village Scene" By Louis Claude Malbranche
Artist: Louis Claude Malbranche
A beautiful oil on canvas depicting a snow-covered village. In the foreground, a forge adds a touch of color, while a few passersby go about their business in this bleak winter landscape. A beautiful vanishing point leads to the church and distant fields bordered by snow-covered trees. This unsigned work is undoubtedly by the hand of Louis Claude Malbranche, an artist from Caen (1790-1838) known for his snowscapes and the exquisite delicacy of his depictions of snow-covered trees. It is presented in a fine period frame of gilt stucco decorated with scrolls and palmettes, with keyed mounts. The canvas bears the stamp of the Alphonse Giroux workshop in Paris, "with the rooster Honoré." Famous cabinetmaking and woodworking firm, located at 7 rue du Coq Saint Honoré in Paris from 1799 to 1848. Frame: 58 x 51 cm. Canvas: 44 x 35 cm. A small reinforcement to the canvas and very discreet minor repairs. French School, circa 1830.
