The Lyon Shooting Of 1793 By Johann Baptist Zwecker
Artist: Johann Baptist Zwecker
The Lyon Shooting of 1793, attributed to Johann Baptist Zwecker, circa 1840.
The scene takes place in front of Lyon City Hall on what is now Place des Terreaux, instigated by Collot-d'Herbois and Fouché on December 14, 1793, or “24 Frimaire, Year II of the Republic.”
Between June and November 1793, the uprising in Lyon against the National Convention pitted the Rolandins against the “Chaliers,” led by Joseph Chalier, who had taken control of City Hall in March 1793. The Convention sent an army commanded by General Kellermann to suppress the rebellion. The people of Lyon decided to resist and called upon General Précy, who organized the defense of Lyon from August 10 to October 8, 1793. Despite fierce resistance, the city was taken and surrendered on October 9, 1793.
This ink and wash drawing, highlighted with white, is presented in its original Pitch-pin frame and protected by a domed glass cover.
On the reverse is a handwritten note: “Wash drawing enhanced with white depicting the Revolution in Lyon in 1793. It is attributed to Zwecker and was part of the collection of the Prince of Galitzine—1876.”
The collection mark of Victor Déséglise (1839–1916) is also stamped on the back of the drawing (see photo).
Johann Baptist ZWECKER (1814–1876) is known in particular for depicting the history of France and Europe through several drawings similar to this one. This drawing was also reproduced as prints under the title “Füsiladen zu Lyon.”
