Abel De Pujol, Self-portrait, 1818
Abel de Pujol (1785–1861) was the illegitimate son of Alexandre-Denis Joseph Pujol de Mortry, Baron de La Grave (1737–1816), a prominent figure in Valenciennes, where he served as provost from 1782 to 1790 and notably founded the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1783.
Abel de Pujol’s first teacher at the Valenciennes Academy of Painting was Jacques-François Momal. He later became a student of Jacques-Louis David in Paris.
He won the Prix de Rome in 1811 for his painting Lycurgus Presents the Heir to the Throne to the Spartans.
He painted the ceiling of the grand staircase at the Louvre Palace in Paris, as well as the Gallery of Diana at the Château de Fontainebleau and the ceiling of the Brogniart Palace in Paris. A member of the Institut, he was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1853.
A dedication is inscribed at the bottom: “Abel de Pujol to his friend, December 7, 1818”
The abbreviation “xbre” refers to the month of December, which was then the 10th month of the year.
The collection mark of Victor Déséglise (1839–1916) is stamped in the lower left corner.
