Michel Nitot, Known As Charles Dufresne, On Ancient Medicine

Artist: Michel Nitot Dit Charles Dufresne
Two small line drawings by Charles Nitot within ovals, set against a wash background
—the first depicting an injured athlete being tended to by an older, bearded man, and the second depicting a man with an injured foot. Both drawings are set in 19th-century wooden frames. The second drawing is signed “n. dufresne” in the lower right corner. The first measures 7.2 x 8.7 cm without the frame and 16.6 x 18.2 cm with the frame; the second measures 9.5 x 6.7 cm and 22.4 x 19.7 cm.
Michel Nitot, known as Charles Dufresne, was born in 1759 in Chezy-l’Abbaye. A draftsman and engraver, as well as an opera singer, he is known for his precise drawings based on classical models, which evoke those of Flaxman; a collection of these entered the Musée des Arts Décoratifs through the bequest of Jules Maciet in 1904. He died in Paris in 1805.
An article published by the Société d’Histoire de l’Art Français in 1950 is dedicated to him.
