Mr. Papon’s house in Montlhéry, rendered in watercolor over a pen-and-ink drawing by Anne-Marie Fontaine. The watercolor is titled in the lower left corner, signed and dated 1934 in the lower right corner, and framed in a lovely molded oak frame; without the frame, it measures 30.8 x 43.1 cm.
Anne-Marie Fontaine, born in Vendôme in 1900, studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris until 1920. She joined the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory as a decorator, where she became one of the leading figures of the Art Deco movement in ceramics. She participated in the 1930 World’s Fair, assisting Paul Colin in the Sèvres Manufactory pavilion. An album of 25 drawings depicting old Paris, based on a text by Pierre Mac Orlan, was also published in 1936.
Her untimely death on May 1, 1938, prevented her from achieving the fame she so richly deserved.
