Care For A Wounded Officer, Siege Scene Under Louis XV
An officer sits on the ground, surrounded by a doctor examining his dislocated left leg while an aide supports his torso. Behind him, two men hold two horses. In the background on the left, a group of men carry another wounded man, while smoke rises in the center of the canvas, indicating the site of the battle. The scene depicted is typical of a subgenre of military paintings illustrating the daily life of ordinary soldiers, the most illustrious representative of which in the 18th century was Antoine Watteau. The painting was relined and restored fairly recently and is framed in a Louis XVI style giltwood and stucco frame. Without this frame, it measures 53 x 60 cm.
