The Street Musicians By Christian Wilhelm Dietrich And Jean Georges Wille
Artist: Jean Georges Wille D'après Christian Wilhelm Dietrich
Engraving after a painting by Christian Wilhelm Dietrich (1712-1774) depicting an adult violinist and his son playing the bagpipes in the countryside in the style of the paintings of David Teniers, a painting particularly fashionable during the second half of the 18th century in France and the rest of Europe. The painting, part of the collection of the engraver, Jean Georges Wille (1715-1808), of German origin but having made a career in France, is dedicated to Frederick Augustus, Prince Elector of Saxony. Commercial aims, sale of the painting or expectation of engagement at the court of Saxony probably explain the care taken in the engraving. It is framed in a modern wooden frame and has a tear in the margin. The dimensions of the plate are 49x35.7 cm
