Pair Of Altar Angels, Carved And Painted Wood, Folk Art, Tyrol Or Bavaria, 18th Century
Pair of Baroque altar angels
Probably Southern Germany or Austria, 18th century.
Wood carved in the round, polychromed, and partially gilded. Designed as a pair, the two angels stand with their wings spread wide, their plumage finely carved. Gilded drapery encircles their hips and extends sideways in flowing folds. Their slightly turned bodies, tilted heads, and sweeping arm gestures create a harmonious whole. Expressive childlike faces, with slightly parted lips and curly hair. Rectangular, stepped wooden bases.
These elements likely originated from an altar decoration, perhaps arranged on either side of a tabernacle. The wings are attached; metal fasteners are visible on the reverse. There is wear and restoration to the polychromy and gilding.
