Framed Embroidery, China, Qing Dynasty, Late 19th Century
Exquisitely fine Chinese silk embroidery, framed and under glass. It is likely a fragment of a garment. It depicts a traditional Chinese motif consisting of raging waves (lishui) and a rock, mountain, or island (jiangshan) emerging from them, a symbol of stability and prosperity. The background is adorned with embroidered flowers (notably peonies, symbols of wealth and honor) accompanied by leaves and small flower buds.
China, Qing Dynasty, late 19th century.
Dimensions: 49 x 41 cm; interior frame dimensions: 43 x 33.5 cm.
