Gazelle - Reclining Antelope, Georges-henri Laurent (1880–1940), Art Deco, France, 1920s–1930s

Artist: Georges-henri Laurent (1880-1940)
This bronze sculpture on a marble base depicts a reclining gazelle (antelope). The animal is shown in a resting posture, with its legs drawn up and its torso slightly raised. The neck is slender, curved, and delicately turned toward the viewer. The entire composition is based on elongated, flowing lines that connect the rounded, soft forms of the torso to the more angular, geometric shape of the spiraling horns and pointed ears.

Bronze and marble.

Art Deco, France, 1920s–1930s. Signed: “LAURENT.”

Length 47 cm, width 19 cm, height 34 cm.

In good condition, with visible signs of wear and scratches on the patina.

Georges-Henri Laurent (1880–1940) was a French sculptor and decorator active during the interwar period, considered one of the most interesting representatives of the Art Deco movement and French animal sculpture. He specialized in depicting animals: he created figurines and bas-reliefs featuring, in particular, gazelles, birds, cats, and predators. His works are distinguished by a synthesis of forms: rather than focusing on anatomical details, he favored clean, almost architectural lines, fluid geometry, and subtle Cubism.
