Jean-Baptiste de Lorraine (c. 1737–1769) – French engraver active in Paris during the 18th century. He specialized in reproducing works by famous French painters of the Rococo period (primarily François Boucher). He transposed complex pictorial compositions onto copper plates with great attention to detail, chiaroscuro, and the rendering of the softness of fabrics and bodies.
François Boucher (1703–1770) – One of the most important and influential figures in French Rococo painting, printmaking, and decoration. In 1765, he was appointed First Painter to King Louis XV and director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. He enjoyed the special patronage of the Marquise de Pompadour, the king’s influential mistress, for whom he designed interiors and decorations and painted portraits and decorative works. He was famous for his extremely refined, sensual, and graceful depictions, inspired by mythological and allegorical themes as well as pastoral scenes (idylls). His style defined the visual aesthetic of the French court and aristocracy in the mid-18th century.
