Portrait Of A Baroness, Oil On Canvas, France, Circa 1835

The painting depicts the bust of a woman of a certain age, seen in three-quarter profile, turned slightly to the left, against a dark, almost black background. The woman is wearing a light-colored (cream/white) dress or robe with a wide collar and gathers at the shoulders. A distinct red/copper-colored bow is tied beneath her neck. Her head is adorned with a finely crafted lace headdress, edged with a decorative copper-red ribbon. Emerging from beneath the headdress are carefully arranged dark brown curls that frame her face. The woman’s face is characterized by mature features, deep wrinkles, a pointed and prominent nose, and a stern, pensive expression.

Oil on canvas, lined, secondary stretcher, original frame.

On the back, a label reads: “Baroness Claude Le...” (Phalsbourg, March 23, 1758 – Nanterre, 1841)

Dimensions with frame: 66.5 x 58 cm. Inner dimensions of the frame: 53 x 44.5 cm.

In good condition, with some minor damage and a tear in the lower part.
