Hand-painted majolica plate, inspired by Italian Renaissance designs (in the style of Urbino, Deruta, and Castelli). A mythological/allegorical scene depicting Venus (or another female figure/nymph) resting, dressed in blue and white gowns, against a landscape backdrop, accompanied by two winged cupids (putti). On the rim, a rich and dense grotesque ornamentation on a deep cobalt blue background. Among the plant scrolls are stylized masks and faces (grotesques) as well as fantastical elements characteristic of Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance decoration.
