Vase With Hen And Rooster, Signed, Kutani, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
Japanese porcelain vase, hand-painted and gilded, with elephant-head handles. On the vase's belly are a carefully painted rooster and hen beneath cherry blossom trees (sakura). In Japanese culture, the rooster is a symbol of courage, punctuality and strength, and combined with flowers, it creates a decorative and auspicious image. The back of the vase depicts a Japanese landscape, with a village, river and mountains. Intricate geometric and plant motifs fill the empty spaces.
