Large Early 19th Century English Blue John Fluorspar Vase
A magnificent and Exceptionally Rare Regency Blue John Campana Vase by James Shore, on its original Ashford Black Marble Plinth. This distinguished English Regency campana shaped vase is an exceptional example of early nineteenth century ornamental lapidary work. Its classical proportions, remarkable material and original Ashford black marble plinth combine to create a world class object of outstanding rarity and importance. The complete original ensemble is particularly significant. The polished Blue John display’s rich bands of deep violet, amethyst, white, honey and amber, arranged in flowing ribbons that reveal the stone’s crystalline depth, translucency and luminosity. Delicate encircling lines provide a restrained architecturalaccent. Carefully turned profiles, crisp transitions and finely finishedsurfaces demonstrate exceptional lapidary workmanship. The dark, polished Ashford black marble plinth provides a formal contrast, setting the vivid colouring and complex veining of the Blue John into dramatic relief. Blue John is among the rarest and most coveted ornamental stones, prized for its limited geological occurrence, extraordinary natural patterning and luminous range of colour. Examples displaying such richly varied violet, amber and blue & white veining, combined with this scale, quality and complete original presentation, are exceptionally uncommon. A rare, beautifully preserved and of striking visual impact, this world-class vase is a highly important example of Regency decorative art.
