18th Century Silver Plated Candelabrum, Attributed To Matthew Boulton

A commanding late 18th Century English silver-plated three-lightcandelabrum, attributed to Matthew Boulton and the Soho tradition, distinguished by its exceptional scale, elegant proportions and sophisticatedNeoclassical design. The composition is centred upon a classical urn with flame finial, from which three beautifully reeded branches sweep outward in an almost calligraphic movement. Below, the architectural body is enriched with finely modelled lion-mask mounts, slender supports and paw terminals, rising from aboldly stepped, concave-sided base.

At 59cm in height, the candelabrum possesses considerable presence. Its combination of disciplined classical ornament, sculptural line and luminous silvered surface epitomises the cultivated grandeur of the late Georgian interior. Placed at the centre of a finely laid dining table, it is especially magnificent: the sweeping branches and brilliant silvered surface create an air of ceremony anddistinction, recalling the grand dining rooms and candlelit entertainments ofthe aristocracy. A striking object of scale, elegance and refinement, equally suited to an important dining room, drawing room, library or distinguished collection of English decorative arts.
